Shaun Naidoo is an award-winning film producer based in Johannesburg, South Africa. He began his career in the industry in 2005 and founded his production house, 33 Films, in 2013. He has since been involved in the production of both short films and full-length feature films that have garnered recognition locally and on an international scale.
His role as a producer extends to budget management, investor liaison, and the oversight of the day-to-day operations of a film from inception to post-production and delivery.
Shaun’s first short film, The Beginning, was critically acclaimed and made waves nationwide for participating in the Cannes Film Festival in 2015. It also won awards at a number of festivals, includ-ing The Mexico Shorts. In 2017, 33 Films won the South African Film and Television Award for Best Made for TV Movie for The Stick-Up.
Persevering through the constraints posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, 33 Films went on to produce The Domestic, a self-funded, independent feature film that was licensed to Amazon Prime in 2022. Through this streaming service, the film was made available to viewers in Sub-Saharan Africa. The Domestic also released on the North American continent through the ALLBLCK SVOD platform in 2023.
Most recently, Shaun and his team at 33 Films produced Soweto Blaze, a full-length feature film set for worldwide release in late 2023. Selected from a pool of 284 individual applicants, the production house was one of six recipients of the joint film fund furnished by the National Film and Video Foundation’s partnership with Netflix.
Shaun’s endeavors have invariably been socially focused, with a strong emphasis on the development of South Africa’s youth and other aspiring filmmakers in the industry. This motivation inspired him to found Becoming Legacy, an initiative that offers a message of hope to the next generation through inspirational talks and internship opportunities.
